Quartzene ( Aerogel product name ) Material properties

Types of Quartzene

Today Svenska Aerogel has three standard Quartzene materials called CMS, ND and Z1. The materials can be supplied in four different forms; as an intermediate paste, as a powder, as granules or as pellets.

All three materials are originally hydrophilic but can be made hydrophobic. The flexibility of the process also allows an addition of surfactants, metals or other compounds to the Quartzene.

Quartzene CMS

Use: Originally developed for molecular filtration, can also be used for water filtration and to improve paint and coating properties.

Chemical properties: CMS consist of more than 90 % amorphous calcium magnesium silicate. The material is predominantly meso-porous and therefore inherently hygroscopic. The CMS is a white powder with no odor and it is insoluble in water.

Properties*:

• Dry content: > 90 %

• Tapped density: 0,12 – 0,18 g/ml or kg/dm3 at 20°C, can be made from 0,09 – 0,25 g/ml

• Surface area (SBET): 200-450 g/m2

• Particle size: 1-80 μm

• Pore size (DFT): 2-20 nm

• Porosity: 90-95 %

• Max temperature: 600°C

• Thermal conductivity at at 20°C: approx. 0,060 W/m,K

Quartzene ND

Use: Specialty silica material suitable for air and water filtration, additives to paint and coatings

Chemical properties: ND consists of more than 90 % amorphous hydrophilic silicon dioxide. CAS number: 112926-00-8. The material is predominantly meso-porous and therefore inherently hygroscopic. The ND is a white powder with no odor and it is insoluble in water.

Properties*:

• Dry content: > 90 %

• Density: 0,08 – 0,10 g/ml or kg/dm3 at 20°C, can be made from 0,06 – 0,18 g/ml

• Surface area (SBET): 250-450 g/m2, can be made the range from 100-600 g/m2

• Particle size: 1-80 μm

• Pore size (DFT): 12 nm

• Porosity: 95-97 %

• Max temperature: 1000°C

• Thermal conductivity at 20°C: 0,030-0,035 W/m,K

Quartzene Z1

Use: For improved thermal insulation

Chemical properties: Z1 consists of more than 90 % amorphous hydrophilic silicon dioxide. CAS number: 112926-00-8. The material is predominantly meso-porous and therefore inherently hygroscopic. The Z1 is a white powder with no odor and it is insoluble in water.

Properties*:

• Dry content: > 90 %

• Density: 0,08 – 0,10 g/ml or kg/dm3 at 20°C, can be made from 0,04 – 0,12 g/ml

• Surface area (SBET): 400-550 g/m2, can be made from 100-700 g/m2

• Particle size: 1-80 μm

• Pore size (DFT): 5 nm

• Porosity: 96-98 %

• Max temperature: 1000°C

• Thermal conductivity at 20°C: 0,024-0,029 W/m,K
